Custom 404 page

I want to make a custom 404 page. I was reading on how to make and i'm a bit confused on how I can do this.

I had a look on at the advanced settings of the error pages but it was not very clear to me which tags I had to use to direct to the url of my custom 404 page; Is this possible or do I have to do the procedure with a .htaccess file?

any tips?
