connecting to blogger - a redirect and a CNAME together?
2/16/2009 09:42
I have tried to set both the domain and www subhost to point to ghs.google.com CNAME records - does not work. Not sure if this is because blogger does not seem to allow the 'redirect domain.com to www.domain.com' box to be ticked any more ..

Any advice on the correct way to set up blogger with dynadot DNS?

I think we need a CNAME plus a redirect - which is obviously mixing pure DNS with custom hosting ..

thanks

In Blogger, your custom domain should be "www.domain.com."

After you do that, you'd log into your Dynadot account and your "www" CNAME would point to the host ghs.google.com.

You won't be able to send people to your URL domain.com, but the www.domain.com version of your site should work.

Your settings should look similar to what is shown below.

How do I create a CNAME?

A CNAME record is short-hand for Canonical Name record, which allows you to assign a domain or subdomain to another address or hostname. CNAME records should only be used if you can't use an A record.

NOTE: If you already have an A record within the Domain records section, please SKIP step 5!

To create a CNAME, please follow these steps:

  1. Sign in to your Dynadot account.
  2. Select "My Domains" from the left-side menu bar and click "Manage Domains" in the drop-down.
  3. Check the box next to the domain name(s) and select "DNS Settings" from the "Action" drop-down menu.
  4. On the new page, select the "Dynadot DNS" option from the drop-down menu.
  5. In the "Domain Record (optional)" section at the top, select "Forward" as the record type, choose forward type, and enter "https://www.yourdomainname.ext" as the "Target Host". (NOTE: This is optional and please replace the value based on your own domain name.)
  6. Under the "Subdomain Record (optional)" field, enter "www" as the subdomain, select "CNAME" as the record type and enter the CNAME record given to you.
  7. Scroll down to the bottom of the page and click on the "Save Settings" button to save your changes.

Please be aware that it might take some time for your changes to propagate.

A CNAME may be necessary for your domain to work with the following: Blogger, Blogspot, TypePad, iweb, MobileMe, zenfolio, ning.

Your settings should look similar to what is shown below:

From Help Section: Account & Domain Management > Domain Settings > How do I create a CNAME?

It is EXTREMELY frustrating to have such issues pointing your domain to Blogger.  I hope you guys fix this issue and make it simpler so that we can have both sites http://mydomain.com AND http://www.mydomain.com.

Thanks! - I still recommend Dynadot over "1&1" and "GoDaddy" because of interface.  Other than this issue . . . I think you're great.

b_w_davie_us:

Actually, once you set up your Blogger account, if you go back to your custom domain settings, there should be a checkbox that says "Redirect domain.com to www.domain.com."  Once you check that box, both versions of your site should work.

Thanks for this information - I was looking all over for this exact topic. I think you might want to add it in the 'help' section for those of us who are just starting out :)
