Why is, to renew, costs so much more than to buy new

I have just now, looked at the renewal fees for some domain names that need to be renewed in December. I can not believe how much these domains cost to renew, especially when, to buy new for the same TLD, is still at the same much lower cost. Like, .ventures, to renew is AU$75.99 vs $19.50 to buy new .online was AU$51.75 to renew vs AU$3.25 Is this a mistake?
